Hydropower, a major renewable energy source, emits more greenhouse gases than previously thought. On average, 273 kg of CO2e are emitted per MWh of electricity produced. This is still lower than fossil fuels, but higher than expected. Some dams could capture methane for energy use. The emissions vary greatly among different hydropower plants.
