Rainwater management in urban areas is important. A model called DURMM helps plan Low Impact Development designs. Biofiltration swales with check dams can treat runoff and reduce peak flow rates. In a project in Delaware, USA, over 5 km of biofiltration swales were designed with check dams every 30-35 meters. The design uses hydrologic modelling to route flows through the check dams. This approach can reduce runoff volume and peak flow rates effectively.
