Maize intercropping boosts productivity and profits in Northwestern Ethiopia.
Intercropping common bean and lupine with maize in Northwestern Ethiopia can increase productivity and profitability. Planting legumes in between maize rows boosts maize grain yield by 13-16% compared to growing maize alone. Intercropping also raises maize equivalent yield and land equivalent ratio by 18% and 42%, respectively. Maize-bean and maize-narrow leaf lupine intercropping produce 20-28% more maize equivalent yield and increase net return by 15-22%. This study shows that intercropping can enhance productivity and economic returns, benefiting household food security.
