Intercropping wheat and chickpea boosts yield and profits in rainfed conditions.
The study evaluated wheat-chickpea intercropping in Maragheh under rainfed conditions. Different planting patterns were tested, and the results showed that the 1:1 and 2:1 ratios of intercropping had the highest grain yields for both crops. Chickpea was found to be more competitive than wheat in certain ratios. Replacement intercropping was more resistant to yield loss compared to additive intercropping. Overall, the 1:1 and 2:1 intercropping systems were the most profitable in terms of agronomical and economical aspects. The study concluded that there is no advantage for chickpea-wheat as additive intercropping in rainfed conditions of Maragheh if grain yield is the main goal.
