Altitude affects tree diversity and forest structure in southern China. Trees are more diverse and larger at higher altitudes, with thicker trunks. Diversity is linked to altitude, slope, and soil properties. Soil water capacity is important for maintaining tree diversity. Topography and water conditions explain most of the diversity variation.
