Breakwater construction leads to erosion and unusable harbors, study finds.
Breakwaters built for a fishing harbor caused erosion and beach build-up along the Thiruvananthapuram coast. A study used models to analyze shoreline changes and propose solutions. Sediment transport models showed sand depositing south of the breakwater and at the inlet mouth. Groins of specific lengths were found effective in preventing sediment blockage at the harbor mouth.
