Brewery Waste Pollutes Nigerian River, Threatening Public Health and Environment
Brewery wastewater from Ama Brewery in Enugu was tested to see its impact on Ajali River water quality. Samples were collected from the brewery and the river, then analyzed for different properties like pH, temperature, and oxygen levels. Results showed that the brewery effluent had high levels of solids, oxygen demand, and low dissolved oxygen. Ajali River also had elevated solids and low oxygen levels. Both the brewery effluent and the river had bad odors. The turbidity and suspended solids in the water were way beyond acceptable limits set by national and international standards. This indicates that the brewery's wastewater is significantly affecting the quality of Ajali River water.
