Study reveals widespread zinc deficiency in Nigerian soils impacting crop yields
The researchers investigated the zinc levels in soil from the Chad Basin in North-Eastern Nigeria. They analyzed soil samples from different profiles and found that zinc levels were generally low, especially in clayey soils. When they added zinc to the soil and grew corn plants, they saw varying responses in plant growth, with some soils showing significant increases in yield. Interestingly, the plants tended to do better with lower levels of added zinc. This study highlights the importance of understanding soil zinc levels for crop growth in the region.
