Intercropping maize + potato boosts yields and profits in Bihar.
A study was conducted to figure out the best way to manage nitrogen for growing maize and potatoes together in Bihar. They found that growing maize and potatoes together reduced the yield compared to growing them separately. However, adding more nitrogen to the maize crop increased the overall yield and profit. Splitting the nitrogen application for maize at different growth stages also improved the growth and yield of maize, but slightly decreased the yield of potatoes. Overall, applying 120 kg of nitrogen per hectare to maize resulted in the best yields and profits in the maize + potato intercropping system.
