Using very finely ground coal instead of oil and gas shows promise for increased combustion rate and decreased slagging and ash accumulation. Detroit Edison found potential benefits for their coal-fired plants by switching to subbituminous coal. Previous studies with bituminous coal suggest similar advantages with sub-bituminous coal.
