Leisure Time Doesn't Affect Welfare of Female-Headed Households in Jamaica
A study in Jamaica looked at how to correctly measure household welfare by considering the time spent on leisure activities, not just money spent on goods. This is important because if poor people have to work longer to buy things, it may seem like they are better off than they really are, and the rich may seem less well-off. Researchers found that including leisure time in the calculations did not change how well-off female-headed households were compared to male-headed ones. This means that adding leisure time to the measurements didn't impact how we see poverty for these households.
