China's Coastal Management Revolution: Beach Nourishment Benefits Unveiled
Beach nourishment is a popular method in China for protecting coastlines and reducing damage. In the past 20 years, 53 beach nourishment episodes have taken place at 49 locations, replenishing over 40 km of shoreline. To prevent further erosion, semi-submerged breakwaters with geotextile underlayment are used. Sandy beach nourishment is common, but muddy beach nourishment is growing due to coastal tourism and real estate. China now understands and uses the concept of coastal sediment cells for managing sediment. The practice involves placing large volumes of sand along the coast to maintain sediment levels.
