The article introduces a new model for designing things symbolically, regardless of the manufacturing process. The model uses a layout method called multigrid with discrete compaction, along with sets of rules called grammars, to check and optimize designs. By formalizing design constraints into grammars, the model can create an optimized version of a design style.
