Neolithic waterlogged wood attracts termites, posing threat to archaeological sites.
The study tested how well Neolithic waterlogged beech wood can resist destruction by termites. They found that the waterlogged beech wood was seriously damaged or destroyed by the termites, unlike modern pine and beech wood. Interestingly, all the termites died after feeding on the waterlogged beech wood. This suggests that termites may not infest waterlogged wood found in archaeological sites. Wood with low nutrients, high lignin, and high moisture content is less attractive to termites.
