Climate variability causing significant decrease in river runoff in China's Poyang Lake.
The researchers analyzed river runoff in the Poyang Lake Basin of China from 1956 to 2011. They found that while there were no significant trends in runoff during this period, from 2000 to 2011, there was a noticeable decrease. The study showed that river runoff is closely linked to precipitation, with climate variability having the most significant impact. Water conservancy projects also play a role in regulating runoff, especially during the dry season. The recent decrease in runoff was mainly due to reduced basin precipitation. Overall, managing water projects in the area can help maintain the ecosystem's water needs during the dry season.
