Innovative Crop Rotations Revive Parched Egyptian Farmlands, Combating Desertification
Coastal plains in Egypt are facing desertification and degradation due to farming practices. To combat this, experiments were conducted to test different crop rotation systems. Results showed that crop yields were higher in rotation systems compared to mono-cropping, especially in the second year. Cereals like barley and wheat were more affected by mono-cropping, while legumes like lentils and peas were less impacted. Additional irrigation was necessary for summer crops due to low rainfall. Cantaloupe yield was lower after wheat and barley compared to after lentils and peas.
