Dairy farms' greenhouse gas emissions rise 3% after new methodology, highlighting need for manure management practices.
Australian dairy farms' greenhouse gas emissions were re-assessed using new calculations. The study compared 41 dairy farms using old and new methods, showing a 3.0% increase in emissions. Different regions saw varying changes, with some decreasing by 4.6% and others increasing by 10.4%. Methane emissions from cows and waste increased, while nitrous oxide and CO2 emissions decreased. Methane from manure management emerged as a new concern. Future efforts will focus on reducing methane emissions from cows and improving manure management practices on dairy farms.
