Heavy metals in wastewater-irrigated veggies pose serious health risks for all.
Eating vegetables grown with wastewater can expose people to harmful heavy metals. A study in Multan, Pakistan found high levels of Ni, Cd, Cr, and Cu in the soil and vegetables. The vegetables had more Cd, Zn, Cu, and Fe than considered safe by the World Health Organization. Both kids and adults could be at risk from consuming these contaminated vegetables. Cadmium poses a health risk, while other metals like Zn, Cu, and Fe do not.
