Native plant boosts wastewater treatment efficiency in Colombian Caribbean region
Constructed wetlands with Cyperus articulatus plants can effectively remove organic matter and nitrogen compounds from wastewater. In a study using pilot-scale wetlands, systems with C. articulatus achieved 91% organic matter removal and 85% removal of ammonium nitrogen, compared to 80% and 40% in unplanted systems, respectively. The plants also produced 5.0 kg of biomass per square meter. This suggests that C. articulatus could be a promising option for treating domestic wastewater in the Colombian Caribbean region.
