Massive sand nourishment crucial to save Nigeria's iconic Bar Beach
Bar Beach in Lagos, Nigeria has been eroding rapidly since 1912 due to man-made structures. To combat this, a large amount of sand was added to the beach in 1985/86. Researchers studied the beach for several years after the replenishment and found that erosion continued, with the most significant erosion happening right after the sand was added. They also discovered that erosion varied throughout the year. The best way to prevent further erosion at Bar Beach is to regularly add more sand.
