Study reveals key failures in masonry buildings post-earthquake, prompting urgent action
The 'Project Masonry' Recovery Project studied earthquake damage to buildings in Christchurch after the 2011 earthquake. Researchers looked at why buildings collapsed and found common failure patterns. They inspected over 650 clay brick buildings, 90 stone buildings, 342 concrete buildings, 112 churches, and nearly 1100 homes with masonry cladding. They also studied retrofit techniques used in Christchurch buildings before the earthquake. The University of Auckland is also researching how to make unreinforced masonry buildings safer during earthquakes.
