Extreme halophiles reveal secret to thriving in salty environments!
Halotolerant and halophilic microorganisms have different ways of adapting to salty environments. Halophiles need salt to grow, while halotolerants can survive without it. Halophiles change their membrane proteins and lipids to cope with salt, while halotolerants mainly adjust their lipids. Moderate halophiles increase anionic lipids like phosphatidylglycerol to handle high salt levels. Extreme halophiles have special ether lipids with extra negative charges. It's unclear if membrane proteins are adapted to salt, but they might be more acidic in salty conditions.
