Unpleasant memories more likely to turn positive over time, study finds.
Autobiographical memories can keep the same feelings, fade away, get stronger, or change from bad to good or vice versa. Events that start off not so pleasant are more likely to become more positive or change feelings than events that start off pleasant. Unpleasant events are more likely to change feelings than pleasant ones. A study looked at how people rated the initial pleasantness of these different types of events. They found that events that became more positive or changed feelings started off less pleasant than events that stayed the same or faded away.
