Optimal phosphate levels boost growth and pigment production in algae.
A study looked at how different amounts of phosphorus affect the growth and pigment levels of a type of algae called Dunaliella salina. They found that higher levels of phosphorus led to more algae growth and increased amounts of chlorophyll and beta-carotene. The best phosphorus concentration for the algae's growth was over 72.6 μM. When phosphorus levels were too low or too high, the algae's growth was limited. Adding nitrate at the right time with high phosphorus levels helped the algae grow better and produce more biomass.
