Plant Power: Wetlands Proven to Remove 98% of Faecal Pathogens
Four types of wetland plants were tested to see how well they can remove harmful bacteria from wastewater. The plants were able to get rid of over 98% of Salmonella and E. coli bacteria. Some plants were better at this than others, with Cyperus alternifolius and Typha latifolia being the most effective. The study found that the plants can help clean up wastewater by removing harmful bacteria, even without being planted in the ground. Factors like oxygen levels, pH, temperature, and saltiness of the water can affect how well the plants work.
