Irrigated corn guzzles water, but boosts yields in water-scarce Spain
Irrigation can help grow more crops in dry areas, but it can harm the environment. A study in Northeast Spain compared irrigated corn and non-irrigated wheat to see their carbon and water footprints. Irrigated corn had a higher carbon footprint, but when considering higher yields, it was better overall. However, the large amount of water used for irrigation made the water footprint of corn worse. Fertilizer use and irrigation water were the main reasons for the negative impacts found.
