Arctic populations facing ongoing contamination crisis, levels still alarmingly high.
Contaminants in the Arctic are being monitored by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP). Data collected over 20 years from all eight Arctic countries show that levels of contaminants are decreasing in some Arctic populations, but not consistently across the region. Most Arctic populations still have higher levels of contaminants compared to other global populations. Certain contaminants like perfluorinated compounds and polybrominated diphenyl ethers are increasing in Arctic populations, indicating the need for more investigation into their sources and how they are reaching the Arctic.
