Mixed bedrock-alluvial rivers often have steps at regular intervals, similar to cyclic steps in soil gullies. A study analyzed these steps using equations for water flow and bedrock erosion. They found that when there is little sediment, steps only form on steep slopes. The shape of a step on bedrock has a short uphill part and a long, flat downhill part.
