Magnesium supplements reduce cadmium toxicity in rats, offering hope for detoxification.
Magnesium supplements were given to rats exposed to cadmium to see how it affects cadmium retention in the body. The study found that magnesium supplements temporarily decreased cadmium retention in the duodenum and liver. There were no significant differences in cadmium retention in the kidneys and testicles. The supplements also helped rats gain more body weight and restored the relative weight of the liver and testicles in rats exposed to cadmium. The results suggest that higher doses of cadmium require more magnesium to counteract the toxic effects of the heavy metal.
