High soil erosion rates in Ethiopia's Koga watershed demand urgent conservation action.
Soil erosion is a big problem in Ethiopia, especially in the Koga watershed. Researchers used a model to estimate soil erosion and evaluate ways to prevent it. They found that the area has high soil erosion rates, mainly due to farming on steep slopes without good soil conservation practices. The existing soil conservation structures are not very effective because they were poorly designed and managed. Only about 35% of them can actually reduce soil loss. To protect the soil in the Koga watershed, better soil and water conservation measures are needed for different types of land and terrain.
