Untreated Wastewater Poses Serious Health Risks Across Finland and Sweden
Effluents from on-site wastewater treatment systems in Finland and Sweden were studied. Results showed that many systems did not adequately reduce phosphorus, nitrogen, and biological oxygen demand compounds. Adding a coagulant improved performance. High levels of E. coli and enterococci were found in many effluents, especially when phosphorus levels were high. Treatment efficiency varied, possibly due to irregular use or lack of maintenance by users.
