Global intellectual property laws have been criticized for prioritizing profits over people. Nations have had to justify laws promoting human development as exceptions to intellectual property rights. However, human development is a core objective of trade-based intellectual property law and should be recognized as such. It is not necessary to protect human development as an exception to the norm of intellectual property protection.
