Tropical tree seedlings grow faster in high light environments.
Tropical tree seedlings grow differently depending on how much light they get. Pioneers grow faster than shade-tolerant species, even in low light. Pioneers have more leaves for photosynthesis, while shade-tolerants put more energy into roots. Shade-tolerant species can handle shade better, but grow slower in high light. Stems don't use up much energy, so most of the plant's energy goes to respiration and growth.
