New research reveals link between root hair development and soil health.
The researchers studied root hair development in citrus plants and their relatives to see how it relates to root growth and other root characteristics. They found that there was no connection between root hair development, mycorrhizal colonization, root proliferation, and specific root length. However, they did discover a significant link between the percentage of roots with hairs and the percentage of hairs with soil attached. In a second experiment, they found that roots grown in organic soil had more root hairs compared to those grown in mineral soil. This suggests that the type of soil can affect root hair development in citrus plants.
