Family caregivers key to successful traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
This study looked at how adults with traumatic brain injuries experience rehabilitation from hospital discharge up to four years later. They interviewed 20 participants and found three main themes: adjusting to a new life, the importance of family support, and challenges in accessing rehabilitation services. Participants found ways to cope and create a meaningful life after their injuries. Family caregivers played a crucial role in helping them overcome barriers to rehabilitation. The study suggests that TBI rehabilitation could be improved by providing more information on available options, setting up follow-up programs, offering age-appropriate facilities, and involving patients and families in long-term planning.
