New EU Directive Boosts Marine Protected Areas for Environmental Health.
Marine Protected Areas are important for protecting the ocean, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) focuses on using these areas to reach environmental goals. The MSFD includes rules for creating networks of Marine Protected Areas, which must help maintain a healthy environment while considering social and economic impacts. The European Union has introduced a Maritime Spatial Planning Directive to help with this. These protection measures need to go beyond just Natura 2000 areas to be effective.
