New flood risk model revolutionizes understanding of floodplain accuracy and losses.
The study looked at flood risk in the United States and found that the current method of determining flood risk, the 100-year floodplain, doesn't always match up with actual flood losses. By using advanced hydrologic models, researchers were able to better predict flood risk and understand why some areas outside the floodplain still experience damage. The new models showed that they can improve floodplain mapping, help identify factors contributing to flood damage, and offer new ways to communicate flood risk effectively.
