Surging energy use in Korea's factories: Activity trumps efficiency gains, highlighting need for industrial restructuring.
The study looked at why energy use in Korea's manufacturing industry increased a lot from 1991 to 2011. They used a method called LMDI to break down the reasons behind this increase. They found out that the main reason for more energy use was the increase in activity in the industry. Some factors helped reduce energy use, like changes in the industry's structure and intensity. Different industries had varying levels of impact on energy use. The petroleum and chemical industry saw the biggest increase, while the fabricated metal industry had the largest decrease. For better energy savings and to fight climate change, the industry might need to change its structure and have specific energy-saving plans.
