New spatial plans in Northern Adriatic boost sustainable fishing practices.
The study looked at ways to manage fishing in the Northern Adriatic Sea to make it more sustainable. By using a model, they found that excluding trawlers from certain areas helped reduce fishing pressure on important fish stocks. This led to economic losses for some fishing communities but benefited others. Creating buffer zones near the coast also had mixed results, with some fish stocks being protected but others suffering. Overall, the management strategies tested were helpful but not enough to ensure sustainable fishing. More measures are needed to protect the marine environment and ensure a balance between fishing activities.
