Estuary engineering projects causing erosion and landward accretion, study finds.
Estuarine shoals in the Changjiang estuary have changed due to human activities like river damming and reclamation projects. The Nanhui Shoal experienced landward growth and seaward erosion from 1998 to 2013, forming a steep slope. Changes in the shoal occurred in three stages, with the volume fluctuating every 18 months. The Deep Waterway Project and reclamation projects caused erosion and growth, respectively. River damming reduced sediment flow but had a smaller impact on the shoal.
