Lithium-ion batteries' massive carbon footprint threatens sustainability, urgent low-carbon strategies needed to curb environmental impact.
This study looked at how making rechargeable batteries called secondary batteries can harm the environment through things like greenhouse gases and pollution. By examining the whole process of making lithium ion batteries and applying eco-friendly strategies, researchers found that the biggest environmental impact of these batteries comes from their production. They focused on a company in China that produces 30 million batteries each year and calculated the carbon emissions at each stage. The study shows that production contributes the most carbon emissions. The researchers also suggested using energy efficiency techniques and cutting emissions to make these batteries more eco-friendly.
