Highway proximity and population size drive retail success in rural Nebraska
Retail sales patterns in rural Nebraska were analyzed using Pull Factor as a measure of retail strength. Results showed that population and major highways were key factors affecting retailing. Counties along Interstate 80 had higher pull factors, indicating they captured more retail trade. Smaller communities reliant on agriculture were less affected by the Great Recession, while larger population centers saw minimal impact. This study highlights the importance of population size and transportation infrastructure in shaping retail activity in rural areas.
