Olive trees' water needs vary by leaf age and sunlight exposure.
The study looked at how sunlight, leaf age, and dry conditions affect how olive trees release water. Leaves on top, exposed to sun and wind, lose more water than shaded leaves in the middle. East-facing leaves lose the most water in the morning, while west-facing leaves lose the most in the afternoon. Young leaves lose less water than older leaves. Dry conditions make trees lose less water. To accurately measure how much water a tree loses, samples should include leaves from different parts of the tree and of different ages.
