World Bank praises Sri Lanka's community-led water supply and sanitation project.
The Sri Lankan Government aims to provide safe drinking water and sanitation to all its people by 2025. They are involving local communities in designing, building, and running water and sanitation projects. A successful pilot project from 1993-1998 was rated the best in the world by the World Bank. Lessons from this project are being used in new projects since 2003. The current project has five specific plans to make sure it works well.
