Artificial seepage stabilizes beaches, reduces erosion, and reshapes coastlines dramatically.
Beach erosion from big waves is a problem, but lowering the groundwater can help. Scientists studied how artificial seepage affects beach shape and sand movement. They used a drain pipe to mimic seepage on a model beach. Results showed that seepage didn't change total sand amount much, but it did make the berm taller and the shoreline move back. Putting the drain pipe near the shore made the biggest difference. The location of seepage didn't affect how sand was sorted on the beach.
