Sector-level trade data analysis often overlooks the impact of product-level comparative advantage on trade flows. By considering this, a new model reveals a hidden factor correlated with trade costs, leading to more accurate estimates. Adjusting for comparative advantage reduces biases in sector-level trade flow estimates and makes them more reliable, even under different assumptions.
