Pre-sowing irrigation and straw mulching were tested on summer maize in North China to save water. Results showed that straw mulching and more pre-sowing irrigation increased grain yield. More irrigation led to more water use, but straw mulching improved water use efficiency. The best combo was 70-mm pre-sowing irrigation with straw mulching, giving the highest yield and absorbing more deep soil water. This combo is the best way to grow summer maize in North China while saving water.
