Straw mulching in North China Plain boosts winter wheat yield compensation.
Straw mulching can reduce CO2 emissions but has lowered winter wheat grain yield in North China. A study tested wide-precision planting and mulching to increase yield. Wide-precision planting without mulching increased leaf area and dry matter, leading to higher spike weight. Mulching decreased grain yield by reducing spike number and grain weight. However, wide-precision planting with mulching increased spike number, compensating for yield losses. This shows that combining wide-precision planting with straw mulching can help maintain winter wheat grain yield in North China.
