The article discusses how cognitive science can become fragmented due to its interdisciplinary nature. It distinguishes between theoretical integration and theoretical unification, proposing analyses of unification dimensions. Two research strategies for unification are examined in terms of mechanistic explanation. The article argues that unification is not always necessary and that premature unification strategies may be problematic in fields with conflicting explanatory models.
