Incoming engineering students' design skills improved by innovative workshop approach.
The researchers wanted to see how a short workshop affected incoming engineering students' understanding of engineering design. They compared students who attended the workshop with those who did not. The workshop included fun design activities and discussions led by peer mentors. They used surveys to measure students' self-efficacy and concepts of design. The results showed that students improved in some areas but still lagged behind practicing engineers. The workshop students had similar self-efficacy to intermediate engineering students and motivation levels similar to engineering professionals. The researchers plan to continue studying these students throughout their first year of engineering.
